Character Name: Yuuri Katsuki
Character Age: 24
Canon: Yuri on Ice
Canon Point: End of season one; after exhibition skate.

History/World: Yuuri's Wikia page and Yuri on Ice on Wikipedia.

Personality: Yuuri is well known in the figure skating community for being a bit fragile, in the respect that he has trouble handling pressure, especially when everything is stacked against him. He is very easily devastated when he fails, to the point that he slips into depression and uses overeating to cope. He has frequent moments of being self depreciating, referring to himself as a "run of the mill" figure skater more than once. His anxiety can run rampant at times, and at his worst, he's retreated into his own head, mentally rambling about how things were going to fall apart and going on a downward spiral from there.

Viktor has been a huge impact on Yuuri's life since he was young, and much of his motivation revolves around him. He got seriously involved in figure skating after watching him, he named his dog after him, and his cellphone even has a Makkachin (Viktor's dog) pattern on it. Once Viktor stepped directly into his life, Yuuri slowly started to develop confidence in himself. This is most prominently shown when competing in Russia, Viktor's home country, as he was very well aware of how many people likely hated him for having Viktor as his coach and keeping him from competing. Thanks to his short program, Viktor's also dragged out Yuuri's sexuality, despite how much he didn't seem to think it existed (WHILE LOOKING LIKE THIS). Despite the depth of impact he's had on Yuuri's life, it still doesn't completely keep back his negativity and anxiety, though Viktor has learned to adapt to it, support him and help him through it.

The creator of Yuri!! on Ice herself has described Yuuri and Viktor as being unable to live without each other, and it's very easy to see why she would say that. Over the course of twelve episodes, it's very clear that they're extremely close; they've worked countless hours together perfecting Yuuri's programs, eating together, bathing together -- doing just about everything but outright sleeping together (that we get to see, anyway). They share such a tight bond, that it would be hard for Yuuri to pull through by himself without falling apart -- not impossible, but certainly very difficult, and definitely filled with moments where he slips off into anxiety-filled rambling.

Despite how close he is with Viktor, that doesn't keep him from moments of selfishness, and an extreme inability to speak his mind over what he's feeling. Much of Yuuri's thoughts and feelings are internalized, and as a result he comes off as awkward and shy, unwilling to share what he feels about something unless it's over something truly exasperating or as a means of protecting himself from being dragged into something uncomfortable. Those he's close to get to see more of Yuuri than others, though even his close friends note that he's always been terrible at making friends with others. His real emotions only seem to come out when he's skating, something he uses on multiple occasions to show Viktor and the rest of the world how he feels about how far he's come since the start of the show. In the same vein, he also has trouble picking on how others feel about him and what he's doing, often assuming the worst first until he's told otherwise. More often then not, this leads to him thinking about himself first, coming off as self-centered and selfish, most notable of this was when he told Viktor that he would retire once the Grand Prix Final was over.

To the public, Yuuri comes off as aloof and cold, not really willing to interact with his fans or other skaters. Most of this is due to his aforementioned anxiety and shyness; many people have noted that he's barely visible online, and when faced with fans of his, he needed to be forced to shake hands with him. Some of this behavior is also due to a competitive side that he is only barely aware of. This competitive nature comes out more and more during each competition, changing up the elements in his program on the fly not only to prove that he can do it, but also to be sure he can get his message across while aiming for the highest score he can. In this regard, his sets almost impossible standards for himself, and sets himself up for failure at the same time. He absolutely hates to lose, something that's been pointed out by friends, and when he knows he screwed up it's absolutely devastating for him, causing him to nearly break down crying during the GPF after he touched the ice coming out of a jump. He has slowly started to be dragged out of this behavior, taking Viktor's advice of accepting himself, but when focused on skating, this side of himself still makes itself known.

Over the course of a year, Yuuri goes from timid and down on his luck, to a polished, professional figure skater with the determination to keep going and eventually have that "something shiney and gold" around his neck. While he still has his weaknesses, he always finds the motivation to push on, whether it's from within himself, or from the people he cares for.

Items:
  • Duffle bag containing:

    • Ice skates
    • Exhibition skate costume
    • Cellphone
    • Blade guard cover
    • Glasses case

  • On his person:
    • Clothes (shirt, pants, shoes, sports jacket, etc.)
    • Glasses

Powers/skills: Yuuri is a professional figure skater, therefore he's very physically fit and strong, and he was shown lifting Viktor around while skating with very little effort. He has amazing stamina, and is well known for his step sequences and spins. He has also been involved in ballet since before he even started skating, and much of his style evolved from it. Since he began training with Viktor, he's become better with his jumps, and as of the GPF, is able to land a quad flip, one of the hardest jumps in figure skating.
